【Knowledge】Q11 If the installed capacity is not enough, can I increase generation capacity?
       Each module in the solar power system has standard interfaces, which means it has high compatibility. If you find out that the capacity is not enough after installing, you may increase the capacity and there will be no situation of exclusion. However, we propose to be thoughtful about the first construction, since the second construction wages will increase and it may cause unnecessary trouble of the grant application.
【Knowledge】Q12 Under what situation dose the solar panels need charge controller?
       Theoretically, if only the battery is large enough, and there is no problem with neither overcharging nor too low voltage, charge controller isn’t needed. However, because of the price of increasing batteries is much higher than increasing charge controller, we strongly suggest you to put appropriate charge controller in every solar power system. Besides, adding diodes in charging circuit is necessary. It can protect the batteries from charging reversely at nighttime. Now, some charge controllers have built-in anti-reverse charging diode circuit.

       Solar PV cells are to transfer light into electricity while the solar water heater is to absorb the thermal energy and heat the water.
【Knowledge】Q14 What is “kWp”? How much is 1kWp equal to kWh?
       “kWp” is the unit of solar PV cell’s generation output under standard sunlight condition. (For example, under the sunlight of 25℃, AM1.5, and 1,000W/m², when the solar PV cells can output 1W, the generation output is 1kWp.) 1kWh is equal to the energy consumption of 1,000W rated power electrical appliances using for 1 hour.
【Knowledge】Q15 With 3kWp solar PV system, does that means it will generate 3kWp electrical energy if only the sun irradiates?
       Because the generation power of PV system is directly proportional to the sunlight intensity, there is nearly 3kWp electricity generation capacity at noon with strong sunlight. However, the sunlight intensity is not strong enough near early in the morning and evening, so the electricity generation capacity will naturally reduce. If the system is grid-connected PV system, with enough sunlight and 5 minutes self-inspection, the system will immediately start to generate power. However, if the system is alone PV system with batteries, when the batteries’ power is not enough, it may need solar PV cells to charge batteries to certain degree before supplying power externally.
【Knowledge】Q16 If it rains day after day, is there electricity to use?
       The solar PV cells cannot generate and supply power without sunlight (rainy days and nights). It needs Taiwan Power Company to supply power with grid-connected PV system. But if it is alone PV system, it may be used until the battery power is exhausted.
【Knowledge】Q17 What are the differences between alone and grid-connected PV system? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
       Alone PV system is the power supplier for single loop load. It needs batteries to generate for 24 hours. Part of (small part) power generated in daytime is directly for load, while the other part (most part) is to charge for the batteries. The batteries are for power supply load when the PV cell doesn’t generate power at night. With consecutive rainy days or occasional overload, it may result in electricity shortage and stopping the alone PV system from generating power. To solve the problem of electricity shortage, the setting capacity of PV cells/ batteries need to be increased, or use other power supply (such as mains power supply, diesel generator, and so on) as backup power supplier.
       Grid-connected PV system is to use power converter with function of inversing power transmission to supply power generated by PV cells as auxiliary power to the mains power supply. When the PC cell doesn’t generate at night, it will be the mains power supply to supply electricity. The gird-connected system regards electricity system as a battery with infinite lifetime instead of using battery. Because the grid-connected system has function of inversing power transmission, it should be applied to Taiwan Power Company according to related grid-connected technical specifications of Ministry of Economic Affairs. The alone PV system is applicable in low areas and island with shortage of power transmission and distribution lines. The price is much lower than that set by Taiwan Power Company. It is the biggest advantage. But the disadvantage is that it needs to purchase and storage numerous batteries, and when designing the system, it requires careful calculation of electricity load. Also, after consecutive rainy days, the demand for electricity safety index will increase the price of system setup and system design. For example, when the PV cell’s generation power is numerous and doesn’t us the load completely, the PV cell will stop generating electricity, and then cause wasted investment.
       Grid-connected system is the promoted trend by various countries. Its system design is simple (It doesn’t require batteries nor need to calculate the power consumption of every load.) and save the cost of system design and system setup. In the meantime, the superfluous electricity setter didn’t use can also be sold back to the mains power supply to take advantage of the generated power. The current only disadvantage is that when the power grid is out of power, in order to maintain the system security and personnel safety, the grid-connected system needs to stop operating simultaneously. If it still requires electricity (for disaster prevention and rescue) when the power grid is out of power, grid-connected and alone mixed type can be set.
【Knowledge】Q18 After the installation of solar PV system, is the switch needed when using the electricity?
        If the system is grid-connected system, then it will operate and generate electricity in daytime, and shut down at night automatically. There is no need of the switch. However, if the system is alone system, there is possibility that the solar PV system generates not enough electricity (such as continuous cloudy days), and then switching to diesel generator or mains power supply by manual switch (or automatic switch) is needed.
【Knowledge】Q19 What maintenance dose the solar PV system need?
       Usually the solar panels don’t require special maintenance. They only need to be washed once two months to avoid dirt from affecting the generation efficiency. In the more serious pollution places, it may require enhanced cleaning.
【Knowledge】Q20 What kind of system type needs to apply for grid-connected consent to Taiwan Power Company?
       DC/AC power converter with inverse power transmission used in solar PV system should apply for grid-connected consent to Taiwan Power Company according to related grid-connected technical specifications of Ministry of Economic Affairs.
